Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology of Anaplastic Carcinoma of the Thyroid Gland

Abstract

|
Anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid is a highly malignant tumor that usually occurs in patients past the age of 60. It is characterized by a rapidly infiltrative growth. At the time of diagnosis, both lobes of thyroid and adjacent tissues are
usually
involved.
We experienced a case of anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid in a 79-year-old female diagnosed by fine needle aspiration(FNA) cytology. The smear revealed large ovoid or spindle shaped malignant cells. They are smeared in clusters or individually
scattered. There cells have abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and pleomorphic nuclei with prominent eosinophilic nucleoli. Also, numerous atypical mitotic figures are seen. Because of the rarity of cytologic diagnosis of anaplastic carcinoma of the
thyroid, this case is presented with review of literature.
